How the U.S. States Map Quiz works

Each session contains 25 questions, and every question names one state or the District of Columbia. You answer by clicking it on the map of the United States. The click is checked straight away: the state turns green when you are right and red when you are wrong, and you can try again — the round only reveals the answer if you skip. Alaska and Hawaii appear in their own inset areas, exactly as they do on a printed classroom map.

What the map tests

Locating the fifty states is a different skill from naming them. The states that share long, straight borders across the middle of the country are easy to place in order but hard to tell apart, while the smaller states of the northeast demand real precision. Working on the map forces you to notice neighbors, coastlines and relative size, which is what makes the geography stick.

Scores and replays

The states you skip are listed at the end of the round so you know what to review. Your best score is saved locally in your browser, so the map is always waiting for another attempt.

If you enjoy this format, the Asia map quiz and the Europe map quiz apply the same format to countries instead of states, and the countries of the world quiz offers the longest pool of all.
